How many grammar points are on each JLPT level?
Hane's archive covers 852 JLPT grammar points: N5 85, N4 133, N3 182, N2 198, N1 254. There is no official list, so here is exactly what these counts measure and how they were compiled.
Grammar points by JLPT level
Key findings
- Hane's JLPT grammar archive contains 852 grammar points across the five levels.
- JLPT N5 has 85 grammar points in Hane's archive, the fewest of any level.
- JLPT N1 has the most grammar points in Hane's archive: 254, or 30% of the total.
- There are 3.0 times as many N1 grammar points as N5 grammar points in Hane's archive (254 vs 85).
- A learner who finishes N5 and N4 has covered 218 grammar points, 26% of the archive.
How these numbers were counted
- Unit: one grammar point = one published lesson in the Hane archive. Closely related variants taught together (for example ぞ・ぜ) count as one point.
- Level assignment: each lesson is tagged with exactly one JLPT level, following the level common JLPT study materials assign it. Where sources disagree, the lesson sits at one level only, so nothing is counted twice.
- No official source: the test organisers do not publish grammar lists for the current JLPT, so all grammar counts, including these, are compilations. Other lists will differ.
- Topic groups: lessons are clustered by the job they do in a sentence (for example conditionals or giving and receiving). The group count shows how the level is organised on this site.
- Always current: the numbers are computed from the archive every time the site is built, so they change when lessons are added. Also covered: 8 side-by-side grammar comparisons, which are not counted above.

FAQ
How many grammar points are on the JLPT N5?
Hane's archive lists 85 JLPT N5 grammar points. There is no official count: the JLPT does not publish a grammar list, so every number you see online is a compilation.
How many grammar points do I need for JLPT N3?
Cumulatively, Hane's archive has 400 grammar points from N5 through N3 (182 of them at N3 itself). The exam tests earlier levels too, so N3 candidates should know the N5 and N4 patterns as well.
How many grammar points are on the JLPT N1?
Hane's archive has 254 N1 grammar points, 30% of all 852. N1 grammar is largely formal and literary, so many patterns appear mostly in written Japanese.
Is there an official JLPT grammar list?
No. The organisers do not publish official lists of grammar, vocabulary or kanji for the current test. Lists from textbooks, apps and websites, including this one, are compiled from past tests and study materials and differ from each other.
