ましょうか means shall I…? or shall we…? It is how you politely offer to do something (手伝いましょうか, “Shall I help?”) or suggest doing something together (そろそろ帰りましょうか, “Shall we head home?”).
ましょう + か: take the "let's" form and turn it into a question. The か is what makes it an offer instead of a decision.
What does ましょうか mean?
ましょうか has three everyday jobs:
- Offering help — “Shall I…?” The speaker offers to do something for the listener: 窓を開けましょうか (Shall I open the window?).
- Suggesting together — “Shall we…?” The speaker proposes a shared action and checks if the listener agrees: 少し休みましょうか (Shall we take a short break?).
- Deciding details — “What/where shall we…?” With a question word, it asks the listener to help make a plan: どこで会いましょうか (Where shall we meet?).
Which meaning you get depends on context. If only the speaker would do the action, it is an offer. If both people would do it, it is a suggestion. Either way, the listener is invited to answer, which is why the question か is there.
How to form ましょうか
Take the ます-stem of any verb (the part before ます) and add ましょうか.
- 手伝います → 手伝いましょうか
- 開けます → 開けましょうか
- します → しましょうか
- 来ます → 来ましょうか
It works with every verb, including the irregular する and 来る; just start from the ます-form. The casual version uses the volitional form + か: 持とうか, 行こうか, しようか. Friends say 「持とうか?」 where you would say 持ちましょうか to a stranger.
When is ましょうか used?
- Seeing someone who needs a hand. A coworker is carrying boxes, a traveler is struggling with a map, a friend’s bag looks heavy.
- Offering small services. Taking someone’s photo, carrying something, turning on the heater, drawing a map.
- Moving a group along. そろそろ行きましょうか (Shall we get going?) is a polite way to end a meeting or leave a café.
- Making plans. 何を食べましょうか, 何時に会いましょうか: you ask the other person for their preference.
Register: polite (です/ます level). You can use it with strangers, coworkers, and teachers. With customers or very senior people, Japanese uses a humble form, お持ちしましょうか, which you will meet at N4.
ましょうか example sentences
The first four are pure offers: only the speaker would act. Examples 5 and 6 are about something both people will do.
Nuance of ましょうか
ましょうか leaves the decision with the listener. That is what makes it considerate. Compare 窓を開けます (I’ll open the window, a statement) with 窓を開けましょうか (Shall I open the window? The other person can say no).
Knowing how to answer is half of this grammar point:
- Accepting: はい、お願いします。 or ありがとうございます。お願いします。
- Declining: いいえ、大丈夫です。 or いいえ、けっこうです。
- Agreeing to a suggestion: ええ、そうしましょう。
ましょうか vs ましょう
The only difference is the か, but it changes who decides. ましょう announces a plan; ましょうか asks for agreement.
A third relative is ませんか (“won’t you…?”), which invites the listener to do something with you: 一緒に行きませんか. Use ませんか to invite, ましょうか to offer or propose, and ましょう to lead.
Common mistakes with ましょうか
Without か it sounds like "Let's carry the bags," as if the two of you were carrying them together.
ましょうか means the speaker (or both of you) does it. To ask someone else to do something, use てください.
ましょうか attaches to the ます-stem (手伝い), not the dictionary form (手伝う).
Is ましょうか on the JLPT?
Yes. ましょうか is standard JLPT N5 grammar and a favorite in the listening section's short-response questions.
- Know that ましょうか attaches to the ます-stem
- Tell an offer (only the speaker acts) from a suggestion (both act)
- Pick the right reply: はい、お願いします or いいえ、大丈夫です
A classic listening item plays 「傘を貸しましょうか。」 and asks for the best response. The trap choice usually repeats the verb, like 「はい、貸しましょう。」
