どうやって means how in the sense of “by what method?” or “in what way?”. It is a JLPT N5 question word you put in front of a verb when you want someone to explain the steps, the route, or the tool behind an action.
You will use it constantly as a beginner: asking for directions, asking how a ticket machine works, asking a friend how they cooked something. The one thing it cannot do is ask why — that job belongs to どうして — and it cannot ask how something was either.
どうやって literally means “doing it how?” — so it always points at an action and asks for a method.
What does どうやって mean?
The word is built from two pieces you may already know: どう (“how, in what way”) and やって, the te-form of the verb やる (“to do”). Put together, どうやって means “doing it in what way?”. That is why it always leads into a verb: you are asking about the way an action is done.
Natural English translations include:
- How do I … ? / How do you … ?
- By what means … ?
- What’s the way to … ?
In English, “how” covers many different questions: “How are you?”, “How big is it?”, “How did you get here?”. Japanese splits these up. どうやって only covers the last type — questions about method, route, and procedure. The typical answer is a means (バスで, “by bus”), a tool (はしで, “with chopsticks”), or a series of steps linked with the te-form.
How to form どうやって
どうやって does not conjugate. You place it before the verb, usually after the topic or the destination, and finish the sentence with a normal verb ending.
The verb can be in any tense:
- Present / general: どうやって行きますか。 — How do I get there?
- Past: どうやって行きましたか。 — How did you get there?
- Casual: どうやって行くの? — How are you getting there?
Word order is flexible. Both 駅までどうやって行きますか and どうやって駅まで行きますか are correct. Putting the destination or object first (as a topic with は or with まで) sounds a little more natural, because you name the thing you are asking about before you ask.
When is どうやって used?
Use どうやって whenever the answer you want is a method:
- Directions and transport: asking how to reach a station, a hotel, or a classroom.
- Using things: asking how a machine, an app, or a ticket gate works.
- Cooking and making: asking how a dish or an object is made.
- Learning and experience: asking how someone learned a skill — 日本語はどうやって勉強しましたか。
Register: どうやって itself is neutral. The politeness comes from the verb ending. With ます+か it is fine for strangers, teachers, and shop staff. With a plain verb and の? it is friendly and casual. In very formal writing and business speech you will later meet どのように, which means the same thing in a stiffer register.
どうやって example sentences
駅までどうやって行きますか。
How do I get to the station?
切符はどうやって買いますか。
How do I buy a ticket?
毎朝どうやって学校に来ますか。——自転車で来ます。
How do you come to school every morning? — I come by bike.
日本語はどうやって勉強しましたか。

このケーキはどうやって作りましたか。
How did you make this cake?
これ、どうやって開けるの?
How do you open this?
Look at the third example: the question asks for a method, so the answer uses で to name the means of transport. That question-and-answer pair is the most common どうやって exchange you will hear.
Nuance of どうやって
どうやって is practical. It signals that the speaker wants usable information — steps they can follow — not an opinion or a reason. That makes it one of the most useful survival phrases for travel: point at a machine and say これ、どうやって使いますか, and people will show you.
In the past tense it can carry a hint of surprise or admiration, because you are asking how someone managed to do something: どうやって作ったの? (“How did you make this?!”) often means the result impressed you.
Answer shape: a good answer to どうやって names a means with で (電車で, はしで) or lists steps with the te-form: まっすぐ行って、右に曲がって… (“Go straight, turn right…”).
どうやって vs どうして
These two question words look almost identical, and learners mix them up all the time. Only one sound is different, but the questions are completely different.
A quick test: if the English question could be answered “by bus / with a knife / like this,” use どうやって. If the answer would start with “because,” use どうして.
Common mistakes with どうやって
“How was the party?” asks for an impression, not a method. Use どう+でしたか. どうやって must be followed by an action verb.
If you want to know why someone was late, you need どうして. The ❌ sentence sounds like “By what method did you manage to be late?”
English “how big / how much” is about degree, not method. どうやって never goes before an adjective.
Is どうやって on the JLPT?
Yes. どうやって is core N5 vocabulary-grammar. It appears in listening tasks (someone asks for directions or how to use something) and in grammar questions where you pick the right question word.
At N5 you should be able to:
- Choose どうやって over どうして, どう, or どのぐらい from the expected answer
- Recognise that an answer with で (バスで, 電車で) matches a どうやって question
- Follow a short set of te-form directions given in reply
A typical test item gives you the answer first (e.g. 「地下鉄で行きます」) and asks which question came before it. Work backwards from the answer: a means of transport points to どうやって.
