はどうですか puts a topic on the table and asks the listener what they think of it. Depending on the situation, it means “How is…?” (日本の生活はどうですか — “How’s life in Japan?”) or “How about…?” (明日はどうですか — “How about tomorrow?”). It is JLPT N5 grammar and one of the first full questions you can use in real conversations.
Noun + はどうですか — name the thing, then ask "how is it?". The same sentence can ask for an opinion or make a suggestion.
What does はどうですか mean?
The pattern has three pieces:
- Noun + は — the topic: “as for…”
- どう — “how”, “in what state”
- ですか — polite question ending
So 仕事はどうですか is literally “As for work, how is it?” English says “How’s work?”
The same shape does two different jobs:
- Asking for an opinion or condition. The thing already exists or is happening, and you want the listener’s view: 新しい学校はどうですか (“How’s your new school?”).
- Making a suggestion or offer. You propose an option and ask if it works: 土曜日はどうですか (“How about Saturday?”), お茶はどうですか (“Would you like some tea?”).
Context tells you which one it is. If the listener already knows the thing, it is usually an opinion question. If you just named a new option, it is a suggestion.
How to form はどうですか
Put the topic noun first, mark it with は, then add どうですか.
Variations you will need:
- Past experience: 旅行はどうでしたか (“How was your trip?”). Use でした for things that are over.
- Casual: このかばん、どう? Friends drop は and です, and just say the noun and どう with rising intonation.
- Extra polite: お茶はいかがですか. いかが is the polite word for どう, used by hosts and shop staff when offering.
- Suggesting an activity: Turn the verb into a noun with の: 映画を見るのはどうですか (“How about watching a movie?”).
The noun can be almost anything: a thing (このシャツ), a time (三時), a place (駅の前の店), an activity (日本語の勉強), or a person’s situation (お仕事).
When is はどうですか used?
Small talk. Asking about someone’s work, studies or new home is a standard polite opener: 大学はどうですか. Expect answers like 楽しいです or ちょっと大変です.
Making plans. When you suggest a time or place, はどうですか lets the other person say yes or no without pressure: A: いつ会いましょうか。 B: 金曜日はどうですか。
Offering food and drinks. コーヒーはどうですか offers coffee. In a shop or at a formal visit, you will hear いかがですか instead.
Shopping. Staff show you an item and ask こちらはいかがですか. You can use どうですか to ask a friend’s opinion: この色はどう?
Asking after an event. After a trip, a test or a party, switch to the past: テストはどうでしたか.

Sentences 1, 4, 5 and 7 ask for an opinion. Sentences 2, 3 and 6 propose something. The grammar is the same. What changes is whether the listener is judging something that exists or deciding about something you suggest.
Nuance of はどうですか
It is open-ended. はどうですか does not push for a yes. That makes it softer than a direct invitation like 金曜日に会いませんか. You are offering an option and letting the other person decide.
The は adds a light contrast. In a planning conversation, 金曜日はどうですか can mean “Thursday doesn’t work, so what about Friday?” The は sets this option against others that were already mentioned.
Answers. For an opinion question, answer with an adjective: おいしいです, 楽しいです, ちょっと難しいです. For a suggestion, say いいですね to accept. To decline, say ちょっと… or 金曜日はちょっと…, and let the sentence trail off. A flat いいえ sounds too blunt.
"How are you?" is different: To ask about someone's health or mood, say お元気ですか. あなたはどうですか sounds like "What about you?" in a discussion, not a greeting.
はどうですか vs どんな
Both involve “how” or “what like” in English, and learners swap them all the time.
The answers show the difference. To どうですか you might say 広くて、きれいです (your opinion). To どんなアパートですか you describe it: 駅に近い、古いアパートです. Remember the grammar rule: どんな always needs a noun after it, while どう never takes one.
Common mistakes with はどうですか
If the event is over, use the past tense. どうですか would ask about a trip that is still going on.
どう cannot sit before a noun. Use どんな + noun to ask what kind of person or thing.
どうですか asks for an opinion, not a method. For "how do I…", use どうやって + verb.
English "How are you?" is a fixed greeting. In Japanese, ask about health or mood with 元気.
Is はどうですか on the JLPT?
Yes. はどうですか is N5 grammar and a favorite of the listening section, where short dialogues often involve planning a meeting or offering something.
At N5 you should be able to:
- Tell whether はどうですか is asking for an opinion or making a suggestion
- Switch to どうでしたか for past events
- Choose どんな, not どう, before a noun
In the “quick response” part of N5 listening, you hear a line like コーヒーはどうですか and choose the best reply. The right answer is something like ありがとうございます、いただきます, not a description of coffee. In grammar items, どう and どんな often appear as competing choices.
